The Inward Transformation
Right now we are living in what some have called the “post-Christian era”. Especially in the West, people not only deny the truth of an all-knowing, all-good God—they deny the very concept of truth itself. What is your answer to such people? The Bible, God’s inspired revelation to us, instructs us to “set apart Christ as Lord in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you”. YWAM-Maui’s School of Biblical Foundations & Missions is deeply concerned with knowing the truth that not only sets individuals but entire nations free. We believe that the truth of Jesus Christ speaks to every aspect of life. We seek to equip students in the understanding of the biblical Christian worldview, basic apologetics, and leadership and discipleship skills.
People join us in SBFM to draw closer to God and to take seriously Jesus’ command to love Him with our minds. At the same time, SBFM is not a purely intellectual pursuit. A teachable heart that encounters deep, foundational truths of God inevitably brings about transformation. Many have completed the school describing it as a time of being broken, then mended together again by God’s gracious hand.
The world needs Christians who know what they believe and why they believe. Christians who know their God will be strong and take action in the face of the evil and despair that seems to soak our societies. Will you commit yourself to His truth, and let Him make you a messenger of the gospel that sets people free?
“…as Christians we are not only to know the right worldview, the view that tells us the truth of what is, but consciously to act upon that worldview…” ~Francis Schaeffer
The Outward Mission
Hundreds and thousands of people from all over the world have come to Christ during the last decade. This tremendous and rapid growth has resulted in many on-fire Christians with few trained leaders. They were evangelized much faster than they could be discipled. Ron Carlson, President of Christian Ministries International, has said, “The biggest need on the mission field is to equip and train Christians and the Church to confront the non-Christian cults…The cults never go to pioneer, but to proselytize new Christians who have not yet been grounded in the word of God.” When Believers do not have solid biblical foundations for their faith they can be easily deceived by the cults and false teachings. Their greatest need is to be instructed and built up in their new faith. This school is designed to meet the challenge of teaching and training Believers in areas of the world where there has been much evangelism but little discipleship.
It is the vision of YWAM-Maui School of Biblical Foundations to equip men and women to apply the inerrant Word of God to the complex challenges of ministry assisting the Church in understanding foundational orthodox Christian truths and the deception of the pseudo-Christian cults. We are committed to sending teams to help train believers who have little access to the solid Biblical teaching that we take for granted in the West. We also hope to raise up students who will be called into long-term missionary service.
“Within the covers of the Bible are all the answers for all the problems men face. The Bible can touch hearts, order minds, and refresh souls.” ~ Ronald Reagan
Course Breakdown
The first three months of the school is spent in Maui for the “Lecture Phase”. During this time students take in lectures from renowned Christian teachers and apologists, follow a cohesive reading plan, create written responses to book and lecture content, and participate in independent study projects. It is an intense mind and heart-opening time that demands attention, humility, and hunger. Students who commit themselves wholeheartedly to the school reap the most benefits from it.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” ~Hebrews 4:12
Lecture Phase Objectives
The School of Biblical Foundations aims to equip the student in four major areas:
Bible Doctrine. Studying the great truths of the Christian faith as found in scripture with principles for sound interpretation and application of the Bible.
Apologetics. First understanding and examining the Christian worldview, then how to respond to and expose pseudo-Christian cults such as Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witness, New Age, etc. and major world religions.
Personal Formation. Deepening the student’s intimacy with Jesus—the foundational pillar for effective ministry of any kind, and encouraging strong godly character.
Skills Formation. Lectures and practice in cross-cultural teaching, public speaking and leadership development training. The second two months of SBFM is an optional outreach. We focus on Myanmar (Burma), and Nepal, but are making inroads into other nations as well. The focus of an SBFM outreach is discipleship of the existing church in the nation.
Outreach Phase Objectives:
Increase student’s confidence and ability to disciple and teach.
Develop teaching, discipling, and evangelism gifts.
Develop a burden for long term missionary service
Increase student’s awareness of the need for teaching and discipleship of the Church.
To serve the local church in our outreach locations through teaching, discipleship, and evangelism.
To equip local church leaders and lay people to defend their congregations from cults and other false teachings.
Teach local leaders and lay people the basic foundational teachings of Christianity.
